Once the Europeans arrived, over half of the Mississippian population died from diseases like Smallpox.
  • The first European to explore Georgia was Hernando de Soto. He and his group of 600 men came for many reasons; the main one being to look for gold. Other reasons explorers came to the New world was to convert the Native Americans to Christianity and to be able to have religious freedom. When the Europeans arrived, the Native Americans were not too happy that these men they have never seen before were trying to take their land.
  • When the English arrived, they began to settle colonies along the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. One of these colonies was the colony of Georgia. Georgia was set up as a buffer colony, which means that it was used to keep England's other colonies safe from French and Spanish invasion. There were many factors that led to Georgia being successful. One reason for Georgia's success was the growing of tobacco, especially in Jamestown. Many of the Jamestown colonists died in the first year.
