Excuse me i'm just going into that building over there would you mind moving.
Sorry no dogs allowed in the building, we aren't moving for you.
I'm the first line of defence, or the outside of the body for the most part. I have mucous membranes that produce mucous which trap microbes, which are microorganisms that cause disease and infection. I protect myself against infection by using things like hand sanitizer and soap to ensure I am clean.
I have both physical (skin) and chemical barriers that will attempt to keep you out, the saliva in the mouth has enzymes that will kill any harmful bacteria.
Oh no the dog has gotten by I have failed at defending the body.
You can't stop me.
Stop right there for I am the second line of defence, also called cell mediated immunity. There are 3 types of white blood cells within me which are macrophages, monocytes, and neutrophils. They destroy cells through phagocytosis They also release chemicals that kill bacteria and make these white blood cells move faster.
Taking vitamin E or Zinc in vitamins will help the second line of defence do its work. These 2 minerals help increase the production of white blood cells which ultimately strengthens the second line of defence and helps fight infection. Another thing that happens in the second line of defence to prevent infection is inflammation. The cells that are damaged by invading pathogens release chemicals that cause the blood vessels to vasodilate. This will cause more blood flow to the infected area where the white blood cells will target the infected area and attack it.
