Acids & Bases Comic Strip By: Jacky Almaraz
Hi! my name is Jacky, i'm a student and author of this comic
hey Emma, what are acids and bases?
acids are substances that ionize (break off) in an aqueous solution to produce hydrogen (H+) ions while bases produce hydroxide (OH-) ions in solution.
how can you tell an acid from a base?
Any substance with a pH value between 0 up to 7 is considered acidic, whereas a pH value of 7 to 14 is a base. Acids are ionic compounds that break apart in water to form a hydrogen ion (H+).
Acids and bases are used around the house for cleaning, but the levels of acids and bases in the body are also important. The body needs a neutral pH and controls the amounts of acids and bases through processes involving the kidneys, lungs and blood.
How come they're so important?
well, Scientists use something called the pHscale to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is. Although there may be many types of ions in a solution, pH focuses on concentrations of hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-). The scale measures values from 0 all the way up to 14.
