Hi I'm lord Jacob and I will be your guide today in Medieval Europe. Today I'm going to introduce you to some of the people here in Medieval Europe.
A Quick Look at the Feudal System
Here I am in the courtyard of a Medieval castle. Let's look around!
Meeting a Medieval Knight
Look! A Medieval knight!
What are you doing here noble?
Lord Jacob will show some of the characters in the Middle Ages during which time King Charlemagne governed over a social system called Feudalism. After the Fall of Rome this system was implemented to prevent an outbreak of violence in Western Europe.
Climbing the Castle Stairs
I wonder if we can go meet the King?
Within the feudal system there were many different classes of people. Some of these include knights, serfs and peasants.
Look everyone! King Charlemagne! What a great king!
Hear ye, hear ye, let us gather in the dining room for a great feast!
Knights were highly regarded in the feudal system because they were important in protecting the kingdom from attacks, especially the Franks!
Many people lived withing the castle gates, but the peasants and serfs did labor outside of the castle on their lords land. They would give the majority of the crops they farmed to the lords in exchange for shelter and military protection.
The King was the most important person in the feudal system, although he was required to take advice from Church officials. The lords and noblemen were also on the same level as the Church officials. The king gave them land and the lords gave him military service in return.
Here in the dining room, we have gathered the king and some noblemen as well as a couple of vassals. Vassals pledged military allegiance to their lord in exchange to be able to live on their land.
