One day in the late 1800s in a little house on the country side in Europe, Mr. White and his son, Herbert were playing a game of chess. Mrs. White was sitting by the fire place knitting and commenting on the game. Herbert heard a loud noise and saw a man at the gate of the house.
Here are your 200 pounds.
No!!!!!!! That was our only son.
Mr. White went to go greet the man outside and brought him inside the house. He introduced the person to them. His name was Sgt. Major Morris. Sgt. Major Morris said that he had a magical monkey's paw that granted people three wishes. He pulled out the paw and threw it into the fire. Mr. White quickly retrieved the paw before the paw burned too much.
Come back to bed.
We still have two more wishes.
Once he retrieved the paw, Sgt. Major Morris left the house, and Mr. White and his family were left with the monkey's paw. Mr. White made his first wish and that was for 200 pounds. After the wish, Mr. White got a shock in his hand and dropped the paw. After the shock the family went to bed. The next morning, Herbert got his lunch from Mrs. White and left to go to work. A couple hours later Mrs. White saw a mysterious man deciding if he should enter or not.
The visitor was well-dressed and couldn't decide weather to come through the gate. After the fourth time deciding, he finally came through the gate and headed towards the house. Mrs. White opened the door and let the man come in. The man had a scared look in his eyes. He said that something terrible happened to your son at Maw and Meggins. He is very hurt but does not feel any pain explained the visitor. Mrs. White did not understand, but she was very concerned. The man told the couple that their son was in a terrible machine accident. He offered them 200 pounds given by the company, Maw and Meggins, for their son's hard work.
Your son was in a terrible accident.
Once the man left the couple, they grieved over what they just heard. After the burial of Herbert, the couple went home to bed. Suddenly, Mrs. White woke up one night and started to cry. Then, Mrs. White remember that they still had 2 more wishes left. She started to ask Mr. White where the paw was, and Mr. White thought that she was crazy. Mrs. White kept asking where the paw was, and finally Mr. White went to get the paw in the living room. Mrs. White kept asking him to wish, but Mr. White doesn't want to because of the consequences.
Finally, Mr. White makes the wish for his son to come back to life. After a few minutes standing in the cold, the couple went back to bed. Laying in bed, Mr. White heard a creak at the stairs. He lit a match and went down to investigate. His match went out at the step, and then he heard a knock at the door. Then came a louder knock and another knock. Mrs. White came running through the bedroom saying that it is Herbert, but Mr. thinks that she is crazy and is holding her back. Finally, she got through Mr. White. Then they heard noises throughout the house. Next the noises stopped and the door opened. Nobody was there. Mrs. White was so disappointed and that gave Mr. White bravery to run to the street light that was flickering down the lonely road.
