Storyboard Text

  • The "Ku Klux Klan" had become an arm of the Southern Democratic Party. Its mission was to terrorize freed slaves and "ni**er-loving" (their words) Republicans who sympathized with them.
  • On December 24, 1865, in Pulaski, Tennessee, a group of Confederate veterans convened to form a social club that they named the “Ku Klux Klan.”
  • In 1866, local Tennessee 'klans' gathered together for an organizational meeting. During this meeting they created what they called " The Invisible Empire of the South."
  • They named Ex-Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest their first leader, or Grand Wizard.
  • "No damn man kills me and lives." -Actual Quote from Forrest
  • With the rise of violence due to Black-American freedom, members of the KKK became more violent. Often using bombs, fires, and lynching to intimidate 'negroes'.
  • As a whole, the Klan started out nicely, but due to a dark turn from political leaders of the south turned into a violent and racist orginization.
