Transport of Trade Goods
The "Brightest Jewel in the Crown"
This is a great diamond to add to my royal collection!!
Fighting between the British and Sepoys broke out because the material used to grease the bullets went against the Sepoys' religions. The Indians could not unite due to weak leadership and a split between Muslims and Hindus. Because of this, Britain won.
India became even more valuable after establishing a railroad network because raw materials could be transported from India’s interior to seaports. Most raw materials were agricultural products which included tea, indigo, coffee, cotton, and opium.
India was called the brightest “jewel in the crown” because it was Britain’s largest supplier of raw materials and its largest market for finished goods. Indian competition with British goods was prohibited.
