Mrs. Loisel is a woman who dreams of a life of luxury. She cannot have this though because her husband is a command man.
Mr. Loisel receives an invitation from a member at his work to a fancy party, where all the rich and famous people will be there. Mrs. Loisel does not feel comfortable going because she has nothing to wear.
Mme. Loisel has been given 400 hundred francs by her husband to spend on a dress for that evening. The money was originally for a rifle.
Mme. Loisel then asks her dearest friend to borrow any jewelry and she says yes. She ends up borrowing a diamond necklace.
She has the best time of her life at the party, she doesn't leave until 4 in the morning. This is the first time in her life she felt like she belonged.
When she gets home she looks in the mirror and realizes the necklace is not there anymore. She feels as if she has lost her life and feels horrible and needs to replace it it or find it.
She spends the next ten years trying to pay for the necklace and it ends up being 34,000 francs. She meets her friend and her friend tells her it was fake and only worth 500 at most.
