The farm dream is a repeated symbol, mentioned often during the book. It is an unlikely fantasy that of which they are living an idyllic life with freedom. George believes this is a true possibility for him and lennie.
To avoid lennie being brutally killed curly, george shoots him in the back of the head humanely. Before he does this he talks to lennie about thier farm dream and the rabbits and he tells him " i aint never been mad" Then he shoot him killing lennie along with their farm dream.
With the mind and inoccence of a small child but incredible strength he relied heavily an george to look after him. Ultimitly george can not protect lennie from himself and kills him out of humanity.
