My dad is my superhero. He may not have super strength but he's the stronger person when I'm in a rough patch. He's the one that's been through the toughest times and still the bravest person I know.
OCTOBER 8 2011, MY SEVENTH BIRTHDAY
Well I was living very happily until the war...
Ah, I remember when I was seven. I was still living in Vietnam you know.
Tell me about life in Vietnam dad. What was it like?
When I was young, he would tell me stories about his life in Vietnam and his journey on boat to Canada. He taught me how to be grateful for the things in life and to not let anything go to waste.
STORYTIME ABOUT DAD'S LIFE IN VIETNAM
Well you see honey, daddy has superpowers to make daddy strong.
Daddy even used his powers to shrink so he could hide with 40 other people on a small boat when he was 14!
Really daddy? You had no food for a whole week? I don't know how I could survive that.
He taught me to accept the things I got and not to ask for more than needed because there are so many other people who aren't as fortunate.
CHRISTMAS DAY, 2014
Santa only got me two presents this year! Last year I got five!
Honey, what's wrong?
Sweetie, remember that there are millions of people around the world that don't get any presents at all...
PRESENT DAY ME, 2018
It's so cold. I'm literally freezing but at least I'm not outside in the cold.
Huh, I guess I'm really fortunate to have warm clothes and a house to live in in the first place!
PRESENT DAY ME, 2018
I know you don't like burgers so I just wanted to run it by you. If you want, you can make a food of your choice for yourself.
Honey? We're having burgers for lunch tonight, okay?
No mom, it's okay. Burgers will be perfect for dinner.
COMPARISONS BETWEEN WORLDS
Because of my dad, my eyes open up to reality and how life isn't always unicorns and rainbows. There are people out there who are less fortunate so knowing that can really change the way you look at the world.
Before I say anything, I put myself in those who are less fortunate's shoes. Because not liking something is better than not having it all.
Remember those times when you hated taking showers when you were a kid? Now look back at those times and think about children in developing countries. They don't even have more than a drop of water to drink! Be grateful.
