This is the opening scene when the narrator first reads and find out about Sonny being arrested and sent to jail for using and selling heroin. He spends his day teaching to students but can't stop thinking about Sonny .
One of Sonny's friends walks and talks with the narrator about what has happened to Sonny as the narrator is on his way to the train station after work.
After the narrators daughter dies he decides he is finally going to contact Sonny while he is still in jail. Sonny responds and sends a heart felt message that really sparks on going communication between the brothers.

Sonny finally gets released from jail and moves in with his brother (the narrator)
In a flash back, the narrator is remembering the time soon before his mother passed when she was giving him advice about taking care of his family members. She doesn't want him to have a traumatic experience like his father did loosing his younger brother.

In the last seen Sonny invites his brother to watch him play the piano at a local jazz club. The narrator finally notices Sonnys passion for music and can see how much other people enjoy hi music as well.
