Chapter 1- Kino, Juana, and Coyotito were watching as the sun was rising and Coyotito was in his hanging box when he was poisoned by a scorpion.
Chapter 1- Kino and Juana rushed to bring Coyotito to the doctor after he was poisoned by a scorpion. When Kino got there he was a bit frightened and angry because the doctor was a higher social class and in the past, the doctors race dispised and mistreat Kino's family.
Kino has a canoe that has been passed down generations of the family. This is considered his one thing of value he owned in the world.
Kino found a pearl in the gulf and noticed its perfection. He described it as perfect as the moon and as big as a seagull's egg as it captured the light, refined it, and gave back a silver incandescence (page 19).
Kino realizes he hasn't been careful enough at protecting the pearl so he wraps it up and buries it. When they woke up the next morning the pearl had remained safe and they began their day with hope.
