Storyboard Text

  • Where does the fire come from?
  • That night, as everyone slept, Maui put out all of the fires in the village.
  • People were very distressed, fearing they would not be able to cook their food or have fire for warmth. Maui volunteered to get fire for the village.
  • Maui followed his Mothers' directions, and at last found the great, firey mountain.
  • Maui soon found Mahuika inside the mountain. He asked for fire for the people, and Mahuika gave him one of her fingernails.
  • I wonder what would happen if Mahuika was to run out of fingernails!
  • Maui took her fingernail, and dropped it into a creek. He then returned, apologizing, and Mahuika would give him another nail, until she was up to her last toenail. Mahuika realized she'd been tricked, and out of anger she threw her last nail at Maui, who had turned into a hawk in fear. To this day, the Kahu has feathers with the appearance of singed fearhers on the underside of it's wings.
