Bethany Hamilton was born on February 8th, 1990 in Lihue, Hawaii. Her parents are Tom and Cheri Hamilton. She grew up in a surfing family, and also had older brothers Noah and Tim. She had started surfing competitions at the age of 8, and got her first sponsorship at the age of 9.
Bethany Hamilton came in 2nd place at the National Scholastic Surfing Association at the National Championships in July, 2003.(She was at the age of 13) Bethany Hamilton won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete in 2004 and was also given the Courage Teen Choice Award. IN 2005, she received the "Mildred Babe Dridrikson-Zacharias Courage Award" from the United States Sports Academy.
On October 31, 2003, Bethany Hamilton got attacked by a 14 foot tiger shark while surfing. And she survived the attack, but ended up losing her left arm. She went right back to surfing and ended up winning even more surfing competitions. She showed so many people that she was strong and never gave up. Some athletes that hurt themselves or get an injury, don't play the season, but that was not what Bethany did. She decided to keep going.
