  • New York Times  vs United States 
  • it was a landmark decision by the United States  Supreme Court on the First Amendment
  • The Supreme Court of the United States held that the government could not prevent the New York Times or the Washington Post from publishing the content of a classified study concerning United States (U.S.) decision-making processes for policy concerning the Vietnam War.
  • The Supreme Court of the United States held that the U.S. government carries a heavy burden to justify the need to infringe upon the rights protected under the  First Amendment,
  •  A burden it failed to meet in this case. Therefore, the New York Times and the Washington Post were protected by the First Amendment and were allowed to publish the contents of the classified study.
  • The ruling made it possible for The New York Times and The Washington Post newspapers to publish the then-classified Pentagon Papers without risk of government censorship or punishment
