  • Bartolomeu Dias was the first European explorer to sail aroundthe tip of Africa. In 1487, he proved that the AtlanticOcean connects to the Indian Ocean. This discoveryopened opportunities fora new trade route to India.
  • Due to the large waves of theIndian Ocean, the ships brought byBartholomeus Diaz did not make it to India. :(
  • Alfonso de Albuquerque ordered the first Portuguese ships to sail east insearch of the Spice Islands. The islands were formerlyknown as the Moluccas which consisted of five islands(Ternate, Tidore, Moti, Makian, and Bacan).
  • In 1512, the Portugese arrived in Ternate. They were wellreceived by Sultan of Ternate because they bought the spices at highprices.
  • I never thought I'd be this lucky!
  • Sadly, In the future, there was so much resistance against the Portuguesebecause they controlled the spice trade in Ternate and they even killedSultan Hairun was the king of Ternate.
