  • The King Hides

  • The 3 Estates in France met to discuss tax reforms. The first and second Estate did not have to pay taxes, so they voted to increase the taxes on the third Estate. The third Estate did not agree with this but they were out-voted.
  • Civilians Overtake Bastille Prison
  • The Prison and its resources belong to the people now!
  • The National Assembly has the power now
  • The third Estate felt that, due to their large size, they deserved power. They started their own voting group, The National Assembly, that would eliminate the power of the King.
  • The King Legitimizes the National Assembly
  • King Louis XVI barricaded himself in his palace in order to be safe from the Revolution. He hired Swiss mercenaries because he did not trust the French Army. Rumors spread that France was being overtaken by the Swiss.
  • Louis XVI is Killed
  • You are guilty of treason and sentenced to death. To the guillotine with you!
  • On July 14, 1789, armed French civilians attacked the Bastille prison. The prison contained gunpowder that the civilians were able to use for their benefit. The day also had great symbolic importance due to how big the victory was for the revolution.
  • Due to the Revolution, King Louis XVI was forced to legitimize the National Assembly. He ordered the other estates to participate in it. The Assembly then produced the Declaration of the Rights of Man, which made all male Frenchmen legally equal.
  • Louis XVI was arrested and charged with treason by the rioters who found power in the city. He was sentenced to execution by guillotine.
