  • Siege of Vicksburg May 18, 1863 – July 4, 1863
  • Battle of Antietam September 17, 1862
  • This battle showed that the south were not playing around they were serious about war and they were willing to do anything to keep slavery plus this showed the Union hey you might think of us as friends but we are not.
  • Battle of Chattanooga November 23-25, 1863
  • The battle of Vicksburg is important because when the Union won the battle they gained control of the Mississippi river and they cut the Confederacy in two. This is important because the Mississippi river can be used to transport supplies and troops to destinations faster which gives the Union an advantage over the Confederates. When the Union takes Vicksburg Confederate forces in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas were now isolated from the rest of the south and that means that the Union can focus on one side and not worry about reinforcements from the other.
  • Gettysburg July 1 to July 3, 1863,
  • The battle of Antietam ended ended the Confederate invasion of Maryland in 1862 and resulted in a Union victory. It also led to President Abraham Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves in the south and it allowed Black men to serve in the military for the North and these black men helped the union in battles because they were fighting to prove themselves and as result the union won more battles.
  • Battle of New Orleans April 24–25, 1862
  • The result of this battle was a union victory. This battle got Grant promoted to chief of generals and this is important because Grant won the war for the North and he was way better than the generals before and he knew that we could not under estimate the south.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg is important because this was the turning point of the war this is when the odds turned to the union side. This battle had Lincoln do the Gettysburg address which was a speech that made Gettysburg, Pennsylvania a national cemetery for union soldiers.
  • This battle was a union victory and this battle gave the union control over the Mississippi River which can be used to transport supplies and troops plus it was a major source of income and supplies for the confederates and when taken they lost all of that and it really hurt because they cold not get supplies to there soldiers as fast and they were losing money because they could not trade there anymore.
