  • she is a poor person and marries a store clerk but he is also poor.  “She had no marriage portion, no expectations, no means of getting known, understood, loved, and wedded by a man of wealth and distinction; and she let herself be married off to a little clerk in the Ministry of Education.”
  • Mathilde gets a ticket from her husband to go to a ball but she has nothing to wear. “The Minister of Education and Madame Ramponneau request the pleasure of Monsieur and Madama Loisel at the Ministry on the evening of Monday, January the 18th.”
  • Mathilde goes to Madama Forestier's house because she doesn’t have a necklace to wear because she is poor. “ Suddenly she discovered, in a black satin case, a superb diamond necklace; her heart began to beat covetously.”
  • Mathilde loses Madama  Forestier necklace.“ I . . . I . . . I’ve no longer got Madama Forestier’s necklace . . .”
  • Mathilde and her husband have to work to pay the jeweler to buy the necklace to replace Madame Forestiers. “Loisel possessed eighteen thousand francs left to him by his father. He intended to borrow the rest.”
  • She worked for ten years to repay the money that she borrowed then she saw Madame Forestier and told her that she lost her necklace and she repaid for a new one.“And this life lasted ten years.
