This doesn't seem right, I should probably talk to the kids.
NO! I hate you!
I've decided to turn the house off.
The Happylife home contains the Hadley family. The mother, Lydia, and the father, George, allow the house’s technological advancements to care for everyday activities and raise for the children, Wendy and Peter. It is explained how the house does everything for them and makes their lives easy.
I can't wait to lock this place up!
The children become obsessed with the Nursery and more specifically the African Veldt, which is then portrayed into the technology of the house. The kids become emotionally attached to the nursery and their lives revolve around this house that does everything for them. The Hadley parents grow concerned over the hostile environment that the kids are portraying in the nursery, and wonder why their kids would be thinking of such things. The kids are emotionally attached to the technology of the nursery and they use it as a therapy, it appears to become somewhat addictive for them because they can always use it to take out their frustrations.
When the father notices the two children hold too much power he attempts to take away by locking the nursery, calling a psychologist, and attempting to shut down the household as a whole. By these action Peter threatens the parents authority and their lives if they continue to go against the children's wishes. The technology in the story took over the place of the parents as peter cries to the house to stop the father’s actions instead of obeying the parent’s commands.
Takeaway About Technology
The Hadley children are outraged and very upset that their parents have decided to take away the very things that make their lives dramatically easier. The parents continue to contemplate on why they purchased a house that took away their very humanity and reflect on how it makes them feel artificial. The kids decide to take out this pent up anger against their parents by tricking them into going into the very dangerous Veldt. The kids get very attached to technology and they are dependent on it to feel comfortable in everyday life.
The kids trick their parents into running into the nursery, where they trap the parents who then get eaten by lions. The technology gave the kids too much power, enough to kill 2 people, as a result of their changed values and degraded sympathy to humans due to the influence of technology.
The takeaway of the story can be that with technology a sense of reality can be lost by the personification of AI into the feelings of real emotions. The parents did not necessarily grow up with the technology that ultimately led to their downfall in the story. However, the kids did grow up with this technology, which means that they became emotionally attached and lost feelings of human empathy, which in the end leads to the murdering of their parents. Technologies impacts can be truly awful if we surround ourselves with it, without knowing the harmful and lasting effects that It'll have on the human race.
