Martin Bernal was a young soldier who, after many months of marching and training, was given a vacation in October of 1940
Martin saw a figure in the distance and when he approached her she asked him, "Please take me to the dance in town", to which he apprehensively agreed
Please take me to the dance in town
She was unlike any girl Martin knew; beautiful and pale, wore a black dress that seemed to be from the century before; he asked her for her name, then she didn't talk at all during the rest of the drive.
What's your name?
The air was vibrated as the orchestra played loudly; Cruz was embarassed by her confusion with the music and, regardless of Martin's attempts to cheer her up, covered her face with her hands
The orchestra began to play a waltz and Cruz wiped her tears and began to dance with Martin; they danced and danced through the night
The dance ended at midnight and Martin gave Cruz his jacket because of the cold. He told her about his life, he felt her becoming sad again and when he brought her back to where he picked her up, she thanked him for an unforgettable dance.
