  • On August 11th, in 1967, William Henry Furman broke into William Mickeys family home. 
  • Mickey woke up to noise, and went Togo investigate the cause of the noise.
  • Furman flees the scene and shoots Mickey. Furman stated to the police that he blindly shot his gun and hit Mickey but told the court that he tripped and the gun went off and shot Mickey.  
  • On September 20th, 1968, Furman was charged with the death penalty for the murder of Mickey and for attempted burglary. 
  • On January 17th, 1972 Furman took his death penalty charge to the sumpreme court. At this time, more black men were tried with the death penalty then white men. 
  • On June 29th, 1972 the Georgia Supreme Court declared the death penalty as unconstitutional because its cruel and unusual and violates the 8th amendment.
