  • Dorothea Dix is very well known reformer who advocated for better public asylums. During the 1800s the Asylums were basically prisons where the mentally ill were kept because they didn't know how to deal with them. Many patients were treated with cruelty.
  • Patient #237: Result Negative. Moving to patient #238.
  • In the asylum the patients were subjected to blood letting, electro therapy, and other forms of tortures to "cure" them.
  • Dorothea went from state to state taking notes of their harsh treatment of their patients.
  • You are supposed to treat the patients, not abuse them! I will take this to the court and make sure that they are taken well care of!
  • After recording the cruelty of the Asylums, Dorothea took these to the court and successfully started to reform the Public Asylum.
  • All brain activities are normal. Move to psychiatric evaluation for further diagnosis.
  • Dorothea passed such as the Lunacy Act of 1845 which gave Public Asylums regulations and special guidelines.
  • After the Public Asylums were reformed, Dorothea volunteered to help with medical works during the Civil War.
