Janie dreams of love and when she sees Jonny Taylor she kisses him under the Pear Tree. She starts to have sexual desires and wants of love.

Even though Joe is dying he still trying to take control of Janie by telling her that she isn't allowed in his sickroom although she was trying to take care of him. She realizes that he is doomed and tries to relfect on their marriage with him but he doesn't care and only wants to be in control. She then finally lets go.
