Creation myth of Cherokee

Storyboard Text

  • The Earth was once a huge island in an even bigger ocean. It was hanging on by only four chords by the sky, and it was dark all the time.
  • I'm glad we have the Sun!
  • The animals couldn't see where they were going, so they got the Sun to keep track of where they were on the island.
  • There were day and night. God had told the animals and plants to stay awake for seven days and seven nights. But most of them couldn't do it.
  • God rewarded those who could stay awake. These were the owls who were rewarded with the ability to see at dark and the pine trees, laurels, and cedars who never lost their leaves in the winter.
  • We both got rewarded for staying awake
  • Last came people, first there were a few but then they had many children and there was too many people. Then each woman could only have one child a year.
  • When the world is all old and worn out and everyone has died, the four chords will break and the Earth will sink back down into the ocean, and will be all water again.
