  • The story takes place in a park, a soup kitchen, and Ian's school in a Canadian city in 2006.  The park was not clean at all and there were lots of homeless people there.  The weather was cold and cloudy.  The park was a dangerous place.  In the soup kitchen, it's noisy and dishes clanking around.  Also the food smells and tastes really good.
  • Setting
  •   Ian is a very wealthy kid and he is also very generous.  Ian is  a spoiled kid but he doesn't brag about it.  He can also be lazy at times but he changes throughout the story..  Sarge (Jacques) is the homeless man Ian met at the park.  Jacques is unselfish even though he is homeless.  Mac is a very enthusiastic person but he can also be strict at times.  He wants the soup kitchen to be clean and not messy.  He cooks everyday for the homeless people.  He use to be homeless himself as well.
  • Characters
  • The inciting incident is that Ian got mugged by three men while trying to get to the soup kitchen for his volunteer hours and Sarge rescued him from the three hoodlums.  He was walking through Selby park.  The other inciting incident is that Ian has to finish his volunteer hours in order to pass civics.

  • The rising action is that when Ian was interviewing Sarge.  Sarge got shocked because Ian didn't know about what happened in Rwanda.  But then he got to learn more about Rwanda.  He learns more about homelessness, addictions, especially alcohol. Ian decided to continue helping at the soup kitchen even after his hours were finished.  Ian learns that Mac is a recovering alcoholic.
  • Rising Action
  • The climax is when Ian finds out that Sarge has a drinking problem, he goes to confront him about it and Sarge throws a bottle at Ian.  It's the climax because Ian finally finds out how Sarge ended up on the streets.. He also got introduced to Eduardo and got told the "The Starfish Story".

  • The resolution of the story is when Ian finishes his hours and he sill comes back often.  Jacques has been ending his alcoholic problem for two weeks.   Ian received a chip the Jacques has gave him.  Berta has also gone back to Guatemala to visit her family.
