The story takes place in medieval Britain where fairies and elves have been replaced by upper class men who go around and rape women. A young knight of the court of King Arthur, was leaving the river when he saw a beautiful maiden alone.

The knight decided to rape the maiden and was sentenced to death, but the Queen made a deal with him. He would have one year to find the correct answer to the following question: "What is the one thing a woman wants most?".
The knight traveled the country as he searched for the correct answer. As his day of judgement neared, he was riding home when met an ugly woman who asked him what he needed. The knight explained his situation and the two made a deal that the ugly woman would give him an answer if he does what she requests after he is spared.

Together, the knight and the ugly woman made their way back to the queens palace. The knight told the queen his answer: “The thing that women want most is control over their husbands and lovers.” The queen was satisfied with his answer and allowed him to live. When they returned, she told him that the one request she wanted was for him to marry her.
Although the knight did not want to marry her, he agreed because she saved his life. On their wedding night, the knight didn't feel content as he did not love the ugly woman and he did not want to sleep with her because she was ugly. The woman noticed that something was not right and when the knight told her how he felt, the ugly woman proposed a difficult choice.
Either she could remain ugly and be the most loyal wife to the knight, or she can be beautiful but sleep around with other men. When the knight told her to chose, she was content with his response because "a choice and control was the one thing women wanted most". Satisfied with his answer, she chose to be both beautiful and loyal. and the two lived a happy marriage.
