  • Aha Moment
  • You promised that if we got close enough I could make a try for home...Let me have a whaleboat.
  • I can't spare a whaleboat. You should know that.
  • Aha Moment
  • Graves!
  • Aha Moment
  • "Davis had never intended to let him go home to Japan." This realization changes things because now that Manjiro knows that Captain Davis won't bring him back to Japan he probably won't want to listen to Davis. Manjiro might even try to get Japan by himself.
  • Contrasts and Contradictions
  • "'Denzo-san,' Manjiro said. 'Excuse me for interrupting you thoughts, but what are-?' ... realizing what the piles of rocks were. 'Graves!'" This realization changes things because Manjiro figured someone else must have created the graves and survived. This boosted team morale because if the person who created the graves was rescued, then they would have a chance to be rescued.
  • Contrasts and Contradictions
  • "Manjiro took one look at his shipmate and felt his limbs turn to pudding...But still, Manjiro was sure, it was Jolly." This realization changes things because if Jolly finds out Manjiro is on the ship, he might try to get his revenge. Manjiro might be more careful on the ship now.
  • Contrasts and Contradictions
  •  "The vote went all the way around the group with 'ayes' everyone until the last person: Jolly.. 'so I guess my vote is 'aye'" Jolly is acting kind to Manjiro by voting for him. He does this because he realized that Manjiro wasn't a spy, but he is actually a normal person with amazing qualities.
  • Aye!
  • "He was no longer afraid. He was no longer angry. He was perhaps, a little amazed. A little surprised. And maybe even a little bit happy." Manjiro is acting happy now because he has a fatherly figure that will support him. His actual father is dead, but now that he has Captain Whitfield, he is no longer scared.
  • "Anger for every time he'd been treated as someone who didn't deserve a voice." Manjiro can usually control his anger but this time he acts angrily towards Davis because he is tired of being bullied and bossed around because of who he is and where he came from.
  • Mr. Davis!...I'll spend three or four years on this vessel, and for what?
