The Colonists refused to pay an increase in tax so the Sons of Liberty boarded the ships. Dressed as Native Americans and threw packages of tea off the ship. This was known as the Boston Tea Party.

12 of the 13 colonies tried to help the people in Boston. The meeting was called the First Continental Congress, which was in Philadelphia. The congress demanded an end to the Intolerable Acts.
The British Government used force to restore order. The colonists began to arm and form a new Militia units called minutemen
Five Miles from Concord in the town of Lexington, about 77 minutemen were waiting when the British arrived. A British commander ordered the colonists to go home, but they refused. A shot ranged out, it was the first shot of the American Revolution
A larger battle took place in nearby Concord. This time, 400 minutemen fought the British, killing three. As the British retreated toward Boston, about 4,000 Americans fired at them from behind trees and fences. Almost 300 British soldiers were killed or wounded
