The novel RAW is an autobiography about one of the members of The Wu-Tang Clan named U-God. I chose it because I really like Wu-Tangs music and wanted to know more about their history.
RAW By: Lamont U-God Hopkins
The novel is set in New York in the 1970's. U-God was born and raised in the projects all around New York. He is a little kid with big dreams and grows up learning how to fend for himself. He has to hustle to make money for survival and goes to jail several times for having illegal drugs on him. U-God is a hard worker and won't stop until he gets where he wants to be.
How are we going to get into the rap game but still be supported?
Through the story his U-God has one ride or die who is Method Man. He also becomes a part of the Wu-Tang clan in the future. In the stories that U-God tells he goes through a lot of it with Meth. They get their first job together, deal drugs together, live in the same apartment, and Method Man continues the business when U-God is in jail.
The story is about the life of U-God before he was a part of the Wu-Tang Clan. The main conflict that arises when he lives in the projects is his struggle with addiction. He isn't addicted to taking drugs, but he is to selling them. U-God starts to deal from a young age to make sure he can eat. Then when he starts to make a lot of money he can't stop selling. Then when Method Man tells him about the opportunity to rap, U-God tries to stop selling.
Hurry up! I'm not tryna get caught.
I need to make sure Method Man can continue the business while I'm in jail.
I enjoyed this book because of how U-God tells his story. He reflects on how the evens effected him or what he learned from doing something.
When are we going to meet up with RZA and GZA?
We need to release our latest song.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves 80's and 90's rap, because it is about one of the most nitrous rap group member. Reading it will inspire you to listen to all of their music just to hear the powerful lyrics.
