Ishmael and his group arrived at a crowded village while looking for food. During this they see kids running around, and Ishmael smells the cassava leaves in rich palm oil. Afterwards, Ishmael and his group head to find a place to sit. When they do a woman comes up to Ishmael and tells him that she had seen his brother and where they may possibly be. When she heads back to the music the boys start laughing as a reaction to the news. Ishmael then thinks about what the woman had said and is happy to receive news that his family had survived. (Page 83-84) This scene is important to Ishmael because it makes him want to find his family and not stop until he does, which carries throughout the entire book. It effects the plot because he will think of his parents no matter what happens or what he does. Knowing his parents are a alive makes him want to find them. Which causes him to get captured join the army etc. The whole book and all the events he gets into is because he's trying to find his family.

Ishmael starts to think about his family and can't wait to start looking for them.
I am so happy that my mother, father, and two brothers had somehow found one another. Perhaps my mother and father have gotten back together.
