In this scene, Equiano states, "the first object that saluted my eyes when I arrived on the coast was the sea, and a slave ship, which was then riding at anchor, and waiting for its cargo" (1). Equiano felt he was in a world of bad spirits and that he was going to be killed.
In this scene, Equiano implies, "the stench of the hold while we were on the coast was so intolerably loathsome, that it was dangerous to remain there for any time" (6). The bucket is a waste bucket where the slaves would go to the bathroom.
In this scene, all of the slaves are huddled up like sheep regardless of their age or sex. Equiano was surprised because he never saw houses with multiple stories or people on horseback.
In this scene, the slaves are being bought. This is the last time family and friends will be able to see each other. The slaves will be bought regardless if they are family or not.
I want you!!
