The Magic Flight
The most terrifying thing was the planes. By now, days had passed; Jonas no longer knew how many. The journey had been automatic: the sleep by days, hidden in underbrush and trees.... But when the planes came, he wished that he could have received the courage. He knew they were search planes.
Lois Lowry Pg: 210-211
Rescue From Without
(Lois Lowry Pg: 222)
Jonas began to walk up the hill. The memory was agonizingly brief. He had trudged more than a few yard through the night when it was gone and they were cold again....... If only he had time to receive more warmth from The Giver before he escaped!
Using his final strength, and a special knowledge that was deep inside him, Jonas found the sled that was waiting for them at the top of the hill......The final destination, the place that he had alsways felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past.
The Crossing Or Return Threshold
(Lois Lowry Pg: 224)
Reflective Text Jonas fits in the pattern of the Hero's Journey because in the Giver he's the one that shows all the steps in Hero's Journey. Jonas is different from everyone else in the Giver and first started with the call of adventure which was when Jonas got selected as the receiver of memories. The theme of the giver is the importance of memory to human life.
