The most important scene in act one was when the girls were seen dancing in the forest. This then leads to Betty not waking up and Reverend Parris asking Reverend Hale to come to Salem to determine if witchcraft had taken place. The girls start accusing other people in the community of witchcraft.
I confess that I was apart of witchcraft.
If you do not sign to the written confession, you will be hung!
In Act Two, Abigail Williams accuses Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft. Mary Warden made a doll in court with Abigail sitting right by here. That night, Abigail was stabbed with needle in the stomach. When people came to arrest her, there was a doll sitting there with a doll in its stomach, the same place Abigail was stabbed. Elizabeth is arrested and John is beyond mad. He is afraid that he will get pulled deep into court and they will find out about his big sin.
Mary is brought in for questioning and she tells the truth about what is happening. The courtroom doesnt believe what she is saying so they bring in Abigail and the other girls. The girls pretend that Mary’s spirit is after them in the form as a bird. Mary now realizes that nobody is going to listen to her so she lies and tells the court that John made her sign the devil’s book. John confesses to his affair with Abigail. Then, they bring in John’s wife and she says they don’t have an affair.
In Act Four, John Proctor confesses to witchcraft because he knows nobody will believe the truth. Even though he has never been apart of witchcraft, he confesses to it. The Judge requests that he write his confession. John writes and signs it but then rips it up. He is sent to die.
John!!! You've never been around witchcraft! What are you doing?!
