Frederick Douglass was a slave since he could basically walk. He was moved to a plantation in Maryland, with a new master named Mr. Covey.
Even when Frederick Dougless did his field work, Covey still watched him as if there was something wrong.
One day, Frederick worked too hard. He got so tired, that he passed out. The other slaves couldn't really do anything to help.
Even though Frederick had gotten up from being passed out, Mr. Covey still didn't care. In response, Mr. Covey whipped him, which caused him to start bleeding.
Desperate, Frederick goes to his overseer, Mr. Auld to get help. Unfortunatelty, Mr. Auld was no help and send Frederick back to the plantation.
On his way back to the plantation, Frederick ran into another slave, Sandy Jenkins. Frederick told him is problem and Jenkins gave him a root that was supposed to give him good luck.
