  • First African Baptist Church, located in the historic district of Savannah, Georgia, is recognized as one of the nation's oldest African American Baptist Churches.This amazing church was built by free and runaway slaves. Thurmond Neill Tillman a African pastor at the church says " Not slaves, enslaved people. "

  • The people who helped slaves were called albonists.The places along the escape route were called stations because they didn't want others knowing about it unless they trusted them Sometimes escaping slaves were called passengers. Sometimes they were called cargo or goods.Albonists helped slaves get from one "station' to the next. Sometimes they traveled with escaping slaves all the way from the South, where they had been slaves, to the North or to Canada, where they would be free at last!!

  • Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating, burning.Most of the slaves will get captured by the slave catchers.

  • The Underground Railroad went north to freedom. Sometimes passengers stopped when they reached a free state such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Ohio. After 1850, most escaping slaves traveled all the way to Canada.(John Freeman Walls,Sandwich Baptist Church..and more) :) some people were hurt on the way but they were ok.
