The League Of Nations Story.
How was the League of Nations formed? Who formed it? Why was it formed?
WE SHOULD JOIN!
NO WE SHOULDN'T!
1914 - 1918 The World was locked in an all out war. The countries of the world had turned against one another to fight for their chosen side. However, in 1918, Germany lost to the Allied forces and were forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, enabling the allies to repair themselves, which they would have taken a lot longer to do without the treaty.
1919 The Big three attempted to solve the problem of what to do with Germany. However, they all wanted different things. Britain wanted The Germans to be strong for trade, but weak for revolutions, France wanted to be the downfall of Germany, and USA wanted as little to be done to them as possible. Woodrow Wilson, the USA President, made a speech, known as the 14 points, where he suggested a general association of nations... formed under specific covenants.
This association is formed under the name "the league of nations", and the league firmly say that they will prevent another widespread war. Whilst this is great, the original creator, and leader of the worlds most powerful country, Woodrow Wilson cant convince his congress to join the fun, and they bail out.
In its early years, the league of nations was successful, with victories in the Aaland Islands and other places, but in the tail end of its life, it was less successful, including losses in Abyssinia, Manchuria, and most crucially, not preventing the second world war. Everyone knew they needed the USA, but they couldn't help them.
1921 The Aaland islands are in scandinavia and they had always been Finnish, but now, they wanted to be Swedish, and the League was asked to intervene. They decided that they should remain Finnish, but that no weapons could be there, and that rule is still accepted today.
1935In 1935, Mussolini and Italy decided to invade Abyssinia. THe invades asked the League to help, but the League decided to let Italy take 2/3 of the land, due to fear that they would leave the league.
