Paravana is introduced and it talks about how the Taliban ruined her and her family's lives. The story goes through a ton of flashbacks that had some positive effects and some negative effects. The flashbacks end and the story returns to reality to show Paravana and her father opening letters and returning home.
Paravana's family is introduced and yet another flashback occurs telling about Paravana's dead brother and how he died. It also tells how family life is at Paravana's house. Such as the roles everyone has in the house.
Paravana's first day at her father's job of reading messages was slow but she did make some decent money out of it. Paravana was proud because she was able to read a language that she didn't think she was able to read, Hebrew.
Paravana and her mother try and save the father. Unfortunately they failed. So they return home, where there is no man in the house, to explain what happened to their family.
Mrs. Weera moves in with Paravana's family and gets things back into shape. They also announce that they are making a magazine. Later on, Paravana sees a girl from her class (before it blew up) that is working as a boy, just like her.
Paravana talks to Shavzia and catches up on their current situations. Soon after Paravana gets a new job as a tea boy with Shavzia. Meanwhile, Mrs. Weera and mother start smuggling stories keeping themselves anonymous
