Storyboard Text

  • The cattle industry busted during the Civil War when most people left home to fight.
  • Cattle multiplied and many Texans could not afford to ship beef but many people rushed to Texas for cattle causing a boom in the industry.
  • Railroads soon expanded and allowed beef to be shipped to markets in the north and east.
  • Cattle drives were arranged by cattle drivers to transport their cattle to stockyards and cow towns.
  • The success of the ranching industry was also the cause of its decline. The open range became crowded and soon it was too difficult to keep track of everyone's herds.
  • Barbed wire spread across Texas and led to the closing of the range along with the invention of the windmill.
