In January 18,1803 Meriwheather Lewis who was chosen by Tomas Jefferson to be the commander was sent to Philidelphia for instruction.
Lewis wrote a former army comrade ,William Clark, a letter if he would join him on the journey of the expedition. Which Clark agrees to.
May 4th 1804 was when the expedition begins and on the expedition they marked the first 4th of July on the west of the Mississippi by naming the Independence creek.

August 20 1804 Charles Floyd dies of probable burst appendix and gets buried at Floyd's Bluff in Sioux Ci.
On October 24 1804 the expedition discovers the earthlodge villages of the Indians and the captains decide to build Fort Mandan across the village.
