The Earth was formed over 4.6 billion years ago. Some may wonder how the Earth came about. Let's find out!
The Earth was formed along with the rest of the solar system. The same cloud of gas and interstellar dust formed Earth, Sun, and rest of the solar system. The CC to confirm this is patterns. Patterns in multiple planets compositions shows that they are made of the same material. The SEP that confirms this is analyzing an interpreting data. Data collected from other planets can confirm that they are composed of the same material as Earth and would therefore suggest they were formed around the same time.
The early Earth was bombarded by objects just like other objects in our solar system. Evidence of this is the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB). During LHB, it is believed that large amounts of asteroids hit the inner planets in the solar system. A CC that can confirm this is scale, quantity, and proportions. We can measure the damage done to other planets and Earth. A SEP that confirms this is developing and using models. We can design models to show what and how the LHB happened.
Erosion and plate tectonics on Earth has destroyed much of the evidence of bombardment by the scarcity of craters. The relative dating can explains this because the time when the crater was made can be estimated by relative dating and how old old the rocks are. A CC that can explain this is stability and change. The change of the crater can be recorded and then therefore find information on the craters and earth's history. A SEP is carrying out investigations. Investigate the craters and how they change.
The age and composition of Earth rocks and other rocks can be determined by radiometric dating. Radiometric dating can help us learn how old the earth's rocks are and when and where they were formed. A CC for this would be Cause and Affect. You could figure out the cause of the dating and then the affect it will have in the future. A SEP would be developing and using models. You can use a model to show when and where the rocks were formed such as a timeline.
The composition of solar objects can be found by soil and rock samples. Samples can be collected to determine the composition of the rock and where it came from. A CC would be structure and function and the SEP would be analyzing and interpreting the structure of the rocks. This can tell us where the rocks came from and how old they are.
