The narrator finds Doodle dead by a bush, realizing it was his fault Doodle died because he was to prideful to admit he had failed and was ashamed of Doodle instead of loving him for who he was.
After the narrator realizes it was his fault Doodle died because he had left him behind out of spite, he begins to cry and hold Doodle shielding his corpse from the rain.
After walking home the narrator tells his mother of what happened to Doodle, and that it was his fault for letting his pride consume him instead of loving Doodle for how he was. They proceed to talk and the narrator regrets his decision but realizes he can't change it but he can change himself by not letting his pride take him over anymore and loving those around him for who they are.
