Let's go see a play and dissociate from all our problems, Mary.
Back with Wilkes Booth...
The Lincolns are coming to the evening show of Our American Cousin!?
John Wilkes Booth was depressed because the South lost to the North, and all his previous plans to turn the tide of the Civil War failed.
Boy, we're going to kill the President.
Kill President Lincoln??
Meanwhile, President Abraham Lincoln wanted to take a break from the stress of being president and distract his wife from the death of their son by taking her to the theater to see Our American Cousin.
John Wilkes Booth heard that the Lincolns were going to be at Ford's Theatre while he was picking up his mail. A plot was about to hatch.
Sic semper tyrannis!!!
Booth plotted with his friends to kill the President and a bunch of other important Northern politicians. David Herold and Lewis Powell were assigned to Secretary of State Seward. George Atzerodt was assigned to Vice President Johnson. Booth gave himself the task of killing President Lincoln.
Booth snuck up behind President Lincoln in the Presidential Box. He timed his shot to go off just as the crowd laughed at a joke on stage. The bullet lodged in the back of President Lincoln's head. He would eventually die from the wound.
One of President Lincoln's companions, Henry Rathbone, tried to stop Booth from jumping out of the box, but Booth stabbed him and landed on the stage. Booth broke his leg, but still managed to shout the Latin motto of the state of Virginia before fleeing from the theatre.
