I knew we should've gone with pizza delivery guys.
Thank you, but we have enough Tums in the cellar.
I have some medicine. It's really good.
You'll never get to the Secretary!
Lewis Powell and David Herold went to the Seward Manor and planned how to get inside. They knew that Secretary Seward was weak from a carriage accident, so he would be easy to subdue. Powell tried to get a servant to let him in under the guise of pretending to deliver medicine, but the servant was too wise for his trickery.
Hello? Powell? I think I'm going to head out now. It's been a blast.
Powell forced his way inside and brutally fought his way through Seward's two sons, daughter, servant, and army nurse. He failed to kill Secretary Seward, but he managed to slash his face.

At the last second, Powell spared the army nurse and instead stuck him. As he fled from the Manor, he exclaimed, "I'm mad."
Back with George Atzerodt...
What would my mother say? And Booth did threaten to kill me, so he can't be such a great guy.
Meanwhile, David Herold was terrified of the screams coming out of the Seward Manor and ran away to meet with Booth in Maryland.
Powell was left to his own devices without Herold to guide him through the unfamiliar city. He hid in a tree for two nights while he thought about what he was going to do next.
George Atzerodt decided that he couldn't go through with the murder of Vice President Johnson after all. Of course, he would still be implicated in the plot because of the evidence found in Booth's room.
