  • The problems started when the British started to influence the Māoris with bad behavior, like drunkenness. As the New Zealand Law doesn't affect the British, they could do whatever they want
  • Why are they doing this?
  • 
  • The biggest demand was to let more British people come and stay in New Zealand, for a new home. Which the Māoris didn't agree with.

  • About 40 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840. Including some representatives to sign for the British Crown.
  • Enable the British settlers and the Māori people to live together in New Zealand under a common set of laws or agreements. 
  • Reasons, why the Māoris wanted to sign the treaty, include:
  • Protect the rights of Māori to keep their land, forests, fisheries and treasures while handing over sovereignty to the English.
