  • Cuba an island in the Caribbean, is under Spain's control. 
  • On February  15, 1898 the USS Maine (an American naval ship) exploded in Havana Harbor 
  • Yellow Journalists made newspaper with little to no evidence and eye catching headlines, in order to make sales. 
  • If I make up lies blaming this on Spain, would my papers sale?
  • Newspapers blamed Spain for sinking the Maine 
  • America declares war on Spain
  • Spain sank The Maine. We will not let this slide. 
  • What they said 
  • For America
  • For Cuba 
  • April 25, 1989 the U.S. declared war on Spain
  • After 4 months of fighting the U.S. and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris granting Cuba it's independence and having Spain give up Guam and Puerto Rico to the U.S.
