Storyboard Text

  • The Green Knight arrives at King Arthur's hall.
  • "Sir, you are welcome in this place... They call me King Arthur" ( Lines 33-34 ). 
  • The Green Knight challenges King Arthur to cut off his head. He only asks that he gets to do it in return.. 
  • "I shall let him have as my present this lovely gisarme, this ax, as heavy as he’ll need, to handle as he likes, and I will abide the first blow, bare-necked as I sit." ( Lines 68-70 ).
  • Gawain takes on the Green Knight's challenge instead of King Arthur, and succeeds in chopping his head off. However, he lives and tells Gawain he must come to him in a a year and one day to have his turn under the axe.
  • "The fair head fell from the neck to the floor... but he never faltered or fell... caught hold of the lovely head..." ( Lines 152-158 ).
  • "As long as he keeps it looped around him, no man under Heaven can harm him" ( Lines 224-225 ).
  • Gawain receives a sash from a lady at a castle he is staying at on a quest to find the Green Chapel. She tells him that it will protect him from death, and he takes it to save himelf from the Green knight. 
  • But hard as he hammered it down, it hurt him no more than to nick the nape of his neck, so it split the skin..." ( Lines 191-292 ).
  • The Green Knight tries to chop off Gawain's had, but the sash protects him and it only cuts through his skin. 
  • “Whatever harm I’ve had, I hold it amended since now you’re confessed so clean, acknowledging sins and bearing the plain penance of my point; I consider you polished as white and as perfectly clean, as if you had never fallen since first you were born" ( Lines 367-371).
  • The Green Knight reveals himself to be the husband of the lady who gave Gawain the sash, and that the sash is his. Feeling shame since he betrayed his chivalrous code, Gawain tells him to kill him. The Green Knight tells him that since he admitted his wrong doing, he is forgiven.
