  • I agree, avoiding conflict to keep peace is the best option.

  • After George Washington had become the United States's first president, he had been dealt with threats from other powers from other countries. Previously, the U.S had made an alliance with France, and France had declared war with Great Britain. Washington knew that the U.S was not prepared for war, and if France were to go to war, the U.S would have to aid, so he had announced a policy of neutrality.

  • A treaty, called the Jay treaty was made between Great Britain and the U.S for Britain to pull back their troops, the treaty was signed in 1794. France viewed the U.S's treaty with Great Britain as a violation of their treaty with the U.S, therefore the French navy started attacking U.S merchant chips bound for Great Britain.
  • The War of 1812
  • President Adams sent 3 envoys to ask France to end the attacks on the U.S ships. The foreign minister of France, Talleyrand, refused to speak to the American's and instead sent secret agents who identified as X, Y and Z. The agents had said that no peace talks will be held unless Talleyrand was given money as a tribute. The American envoys refused to pay tribute.

  • North and South America are to be free and independent from European powers.
  • U.S ships were being seized and U.S sailors were being impressed and kidnaped to serve in the British Army. America was furious when a British Warship (Leopard) stopped a U.S warship (Chesapeake) to search for deserters. The captain of the Chesapeake refused to allow a search and the Leopard opened fire. This action had started a war between Great Britain and the U.S.
  • The U.S forces had tried to cross into Canada however were turned back by British forces. The U.S, however kept trying to get back in but gave up on Canada in 1814 once 15,000 British troops were sent to Canada. During 1814, a British army had also invaded Washington D.C. and burned down pub buildings before moving on to Baltimore, Maryland where they bombarded Fort McHenry.

  • President Monroe announced a policy to Congress in 1823 saying that North and South America were "free and independent" and were "not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by European powers." The Europeans though of Monroe's announcement as arrogant while the Americans supported the policy.
