Henry Ossian Flipper was born, as a slave, on March 21, 1856.
As a freshman at Atlanta University, in 1873, he was appointed to the U.S. Military Academy.
He graduated June 14, 1877, and then accepted the position of second lieutenant.
Flipper served at the following forts in Texas: Concho, Elliot, Quitman, and Davis. He also served at Fort Sill in the Indian Territory
Flipper was released as second lieutenant and after that, in 1901, he got a job as legal assistant to a mining company. He worked in that job for 11 years.
Henry Ossian Flipper died of a heart attack on May 3, 1940.
