  • Falling Action
  • The madman has decided that the old man's time has come and suffocates him with the bed. He lets out a scream and then dies. After a few seconds he was dead.
  • Falling Action
  • The mad man thought - A neighbor must have heard. But what do I have to fear?
  • The madman starts dismembering the old man. He cut off his head, arms, and legs.
  • Falling Action
  • I feel myself getting paler and paler.  My head is aching, my ears are ringing. The ringing soon became more distinct. I figured out the ringing was not inside my ears, but it was the sound of his hideous heart.
  • The madman takes apart three floorboards and puts the parts of the old man inside. He lays the boards back in the exact position so that nobody would expect that  he would have taken them apart.
  • Resolution
  • Here! Here is where he lies! I admit the deed! Here is the beating of his hideous heart!
  • Three police showed up at the mad mans's door asking if there was a scream. The madman said that it was just him screaming because of a dream he had.
  • The madman showed the police around his house showing that he was not guilty. He said that the old man was not in the country. They talked in the old man's room and the mad man placed his chair right on top of the planks that got removed.
  • He admitted to killing the old man.  He still spoke fluently but with a heightened voice. He was wondering why they would not be gone. He could barely see those hypocritical smiles anymore. He felt that he must scream or die, so he admitted his deed.
